Training & Qualifications
You do not require any skills to join VMR, although the more knowledge you have the easier it will be.
We will teach you everything required to become a valuable "Operational" member of VMR Mornington & Hastings
All skippers are either Commercially Qualified under AMSAR - Marine Division or are currently studying to become a Commercial Coxswain, Master 5 or recognised as a "skipper" under the Emergency Management Victoria guidelines.
Seamanship and boat handling are carried out under the tutorage of our training officer.
Simulated rescues using member’s own boats, yachts, sister organisations, Life Saving Victoria & Victorian Water Police are carried out on a regular basis and in a manner as realistic as possible. The members train every week of the year.
All members hold VHF/HF radio licenses, which are only issued on passing the prescribed State examination.
A minimum of Level 2 Advanced First Aid
All members attend training in specilised marine first aid
Local ambulance paramedics attend the base during winter training to assist members in brushing up on First Aid.
Members attend navigation, weather/tides, and search and rescue theory lectures.
