Training & Qualifications

You do not require any skills to join VMR, although the more knowledge you have the easier it will be.

We will teach you everything required to become a valuable "Operational" member of VMR Mornington & Hastings

  • All skippers are either Commercially Qualified under Transport Safety Victoria - Marine Division or are currently studying to become a Commercial Coxswain or Master 5. We believe we are the only volunteer marine rescue service in Victoria who can claim this achievement

  • Seamanship and boat handling are carried out under the tutorage of our training officer.

  • Simulated rescues using member’s own boats, yachts, sister organisations, Life Saving Victoria & Victorian Water Police are carried out on a regular basis and in a manner as realistic as possible. The members train every week of the year.

  • All members hold VHF/HF radio licenses, which are only issued on passing the prescribed State examination.

  • A minimum of Level 2 Advanced First Aid

  • All members attend training in specilised marine first aid

Local ambulance paramedics attend the base during winter training to assist members in brushing up on First Aid.

Members attend navigation, weather/tides, and search and rescue theory lectures.

Click this link to read a poem ("A job well done") written by a past President & Life Member Ross Burriss. Ross wrote this after a particually memorable rescue in 1992. I think this encapsulates why we do what we do.
